Hello everyone, LCSC supplier East Wei Electronics Co., Ltd. (Tonver) has shared with us the basics of DIP switches. In this article, Tonver will provide a detailed introduction to the definition, features, and applications of DIP switches.
Definition of DIP Switches
A DIP switch is a small switch directly packaged on the printed circuit board of a circuit to set various electronic devices. Because its terminal shape and arrangement are the same as the Dual In-line Package (IC), it is named a DIP switch. DIP switches include a sliding type that switches ON/OFF by sliding the operating part and a piano type that switches by pressing the operating part.
There is also a rotary type that sets binary and BCD codes by rotating the operating part. DIP switches are mainly used in business equipment such as communication equipment and industrial machinery, and they come in a rich variety of products with different installation methods, number of poles, operating part shapes, sealing performance, etc.
Features of DIP Switches
Small and Thin
The standard distance (pitch) between adjacent terminals of a DIP switch is 2.54mm. There is also a half-pitch type with a pitch reduced to 1.27mm to reduce the mounting area on the substrate. In terms of height, in addition to the ordinary 3.5mm, with the lowering of electronic components, low-profile products with heights of 2.2mm and 1.55mm are also available for users to choose from.
High Contact Reliability
There are also products with self-cleaning functions that reduce the contact resistance between contacts. DIP switches generally do not operate frequently, so manufacturers will take many measures to improve the contact reliability during long-term storage, such as using a special self-cleaning mechanism that can rub the contact surface during operation, adopting a structure that increases the contact pressure between contacts, and gold plating the contacts, etc.
Automatic Packaging
In addition to individual packaging, DIP switches are also available in rod packaging and tape packaging and can be automatically packaged like other electronic parts mounted on the substrate.
DIP switches can be divided into sliding type, piano type, and rotary type according to the operation method.
