Introduction
The FAN4146 is a low-power controller specifically designed for AC outlet arc-fault circuit interrupters (ALCI) and two-wire residual current devices (RCD). The FAN4146 can detect dangerous ground conditions and disconnect the circuit before a harmful electric shock occurs.
The FAN4146 internally contains a diode rectifier, a high-precision 12V bandgap shunt regulator, a precise low-Vos offset sensing amplifier, a time-delay noise filter, a window detection comparator, and a thyristor driver. With a minimum number of external components, the FAN4146 can detect and prevent line-to-ground faults. The minimal number of components and the small SUPERSOT package make the FAN4146 an ultra-small, low-cost application solution.
The FAN4146 circuit includes a built-in rectifier and shunt regulator, requiring only a low quiescent current and allowing the use of high-value, low-power series resistors. The built-in temperature-compensated shunt regulator, sensing amplifier, and bias circuit provide high-precision ground fault detection. The low-Vos offset sensing amplifier allows the induction coil to be directly coupled to the feedback signal terminal of the amplifier without the need for a large-capacity 50/60Hz AC coupling capacitor.
The built-in time-delay filter can filter out high-frequency noise spikes in inductive loads, reducing false harmful triggers. The built-in thyristor driver has temperature compensation, and this design can meet the current requirements for selecting external thyristors over a wide range. The minimal number of external components and the 6-pin SUPERSOT package result in a low-cost, compact design and layout.
