Introduction
The SM712 transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode is designed for asymmetric (12V to -7V) protection in RS-485 multipoint data transmission standard applications. The SM712 can protect equipment from transient voltages generated by ESD, EFT, and lightning surges. The SM712 features 400W (tp = 8/20μs) power handling capability, accommodating the higher transient voltage levels that may occur in extended common-mode applications. This improves device reliability and eliminates the "guesswork" associated with using Zener diodes not rated to handle such transient conditions. The integrated design helps reduce voltage overshoot associated with trace inductance. The SM712's low clamping voltage minimizes stress on the protected transceiver. The SOT-23 package provides design flexibility for "crowded" PCB layouts.
